To enter a website address or URL:

  • Tap and hold the stylus on the screen to bring up the keypad.

  • Type the website address or URL in the combo box above the keypad. If another website name is displayed, you can type the new address over it.

    NOTE: Tap and hold the stylus on a key for auto-repeat.

  • Tap the Go key on the right side of the keypad.

As the page loads, you will see a blinking hawkeye in the upper right corner of the screen. This icon disappears after ThunderHawk has fully loaded the page.

Press the rocker button to scroll up, down, left, or right on a page.

How do I bring up the keypad?

Tap and hold the stylus on the screen to bring up the keypad to enter a Web page URL or use the toolbar. To edit a text field, tap the text field with the stylus to bring up the keypad.

What is the ThunderHawk toolbar?

The ThunderHawk toolbar is above the keypad. To access the ThunderHawk toolbar, tap and hold the the stylus on the screen. The toolbar has the following buttons:

Escape Esc Close keypad.
Exit X Exit ThunderHawk.
Back Left arrow Go back one page.
Forward Right arrow Go forward one page.
Stop Square Stop loading the page.
Curved Arrows Reload page
Zoom Magnifying glass Change the screen area. Choose from a 480x360, 640x480, or a 800x600 virtual screen.
Favorites Folder Favorites
Checkmark Checkmark View or set ThunderHawk Account Options such as user name, password, registration key, and advanced user options.
Windows Windows Logo Go to Windows, but leave ThunderHawk running in the background. To return to ThunderHawk, choose ThunderHawk from the Start menu.
Question Mark Question Mark Open the ThunderHawk help page.
Go Go Go to the website listed in the combo box about the keypad. The Enter key also performs this function.

How do I store my Favorites?

The Favorites folder provides a way to store Web pages you visit often.

To add a Web page to your Favorites folder:

  1. Tap and hold the stylus on the screen to bring up the keypad.
  2. Enter the URL of the Web page you want to store in your Favorites folder, and tap Go. Wait until the page downloads.
  3. Bring up the keypad again.
  4. Tap the Favorites folder on the toolbar.
  5. Tap the Add / Delete tab.
  6. Tap the Add button to add the URL to the current folder.

    Or tap the New Folder button to create a new folder.

    Enter the new folder name, and tap Add to add it . Then choose this folder from the Add/Delete tab to and tap add to add the URL to this folder.

  7. Tap the Add button to add the URL to the Mobile Favorites folder. Or tap the folder in which you want to add the URL, and then tap Add.
  8. Tap the Done button.

To access a Web page that is already stored in your Favorites folder:

  1. Tap and hold the stylus on the screen to bring up the keypad.
  2. Tap the Favorites folder on the toolbar.
  3. Tap the name of the Web page that you want to go to.

Other tips & tricks:

  • ThunderHawk supports a History list.
  • The ThunderHawk server can find a Web address using keywords.
    For example, instead of typing a complete URL, such as “http://www.looksmart.com”, type: “looksmart”. Then tap Go to go to the site.

Is there a quick way to get to my favorite Web pages?

There are several ways of getting to Web pages you commonly access rather than fully typing URLs. Three are listed below:

  • ThunderHawk supports a Favorites folder to store Web pages you access frequently.
  • The combo box above the keypad functions as a history list. It stores the previous sites you have visited in your session.
  • The ThunderHawk server can find a Web address using keywords. For example, instead of typing a complete URL, such as “http://www.looksmart.com”
    Type: looksmart
    Then tap Go to go to the site.

How do I delete Favorites?

To delete Favorites:

  1. Tap the Favorites folder to bring up the Favorites screen.

  3. Choose the Favorite to delete.
  4. Tap the Delete button.
  5. Tap Done when finished deleting Favorites.

How do I delete or clear the History list?

To delete stored history pages:

  1. Tap the checkmark on the toolbar to access the User Options screen.
  2. Tap the Advanced tab.
  3. Tap the Clear History button.

What is that blinking hawkeye?

ThunderHawk displays a blinking hawkeye in the top right corner of the page when it is actively loading the page. When the hawkeye disappears, it signifies that ThunderHawk has finished downloading the page.

How do I change to 800x600 effective resolution?

Tap the Magnifying Glass on the toolbar and select High (800x600) for an 800x600 virtual pixel resolution. Tap Ok to make the change. This change is saved across sessions, so every time you open ThunderHawk you will see pages in this resolution.

Can I rotate my Pocket PC in the other direction and still use ThunderHawk?

Yes. You can change the orientation of ThunderHawk to use a right-handed (RH) or left-handed (LH) landscape orientation.

To change the landscape orientation of ThunderHawk:

  1. Tap the checkmark icon on the keypad to bring up ThunderHawk User Options.
  2. Tap the Advanced tab.
  3. Choose RH-Landscape or LH-Landscape in the Orientation drop-down.
  4. Click Ok.

ThunderHawk preserves this orientation whenever you run it.

Bitstream has discovered a possible conflict that occurs if you launch ThunderHawk, and then open or close the left sliding keyboard during the browsing session. ThunderHawk engineers are working to resolve this problem and will issue an update when it is fixed.

NOTE: If you have a built-in slide-out keyboard on your device, keep the keyboard in one position (opened or closed) for the duration of your ThunderHawk browsing session.

How do I program power keys on ThunderHawk?

You can lighten up your typing load by setting up to 10 programmable keys for frequently entered text like usernames, passwords, Web e-mail signatures, or database entries. The programmable keys are mapped to the 10 digits along the top row of the keypad.

To set programmable keys:

  1. Bring up the keypad by tapping and holding the stylus on the screen.
  2. Enter the content that you want to map to a key into the combo box above the keypad.
  3. On the keypad, tap Ctl, then Shift, and CAP.
    NOTE: The buttons should show white text against a black background, denoting that they have been “pressed”.
  4. Assign the content to a key by tapping a number, for example, the “1” key. If your Pocket PC has sound capabilities, a small beep will confirm that the key is now programmed.
  5. To use a programmable key, tap the Ctl key so that it is pressed and tap the digit to retrieve the content stored. The saved content will replace any existing text in the editor window.

All programmable key assignments are stored across ThunderHawk sessions. You can overwrite the contents of a programmable key by following the steps above to reprogram it.

How do I exit ThunderHawk?

Tap the X icon on the toolbar to exit ThunderHawk.

To keep ThunderHawk running in the background and switch to the Windows desktop, tap the Windows logo icon on the toolbar. To switch back to ThunderHawk, choose it from the Start menu.

How do I download files?

ThunderHawk can download files, but it cannot separately download Web page content parts, or graphics that are part of a Web page design. Once the download has completed, ThunderHawk displays a dialog asking if you want to open the file or not.

To download a file:

When a usable link exists, select it. ThunderHawk either opens the file, or prompts you to download the file. ThunderHawk puts downloaded files into the “My Documents” folder on your Pocket PC or Smartphone.

What are the ThunderHawk User Options?

The ThunderHawk User Options are settings you can view or change for account information such as user name, password, and registration key, as well as advanced settings such as browser user agent, HTTP wrapping, and cookie management. To access the User Options screen, tap the checkmark on the toolbar. The screen contains two tabs, Account Info and Advanced.

To access the ThunderHawk User Options on a Smartphone, press Menu > Options.

What are the ThunderHawk Advanced User Options?

Click the checkbox on the toolbar to access the ThunderHawk User Options, and click the Advanced tab to access the Advanced User Options.

The ThunderHawk Advanced User Options include configurable settings for the User Agent for your ThunderHawk client, as well as other settings such as a toggle control for HTTP Wrapping, access to a page where you can manage your Cookies, a Clear History button, and a landscape Orientation setting. The ThunderHawk homepage is not an editable option at this time.

Does Thunderhawk log secure transactions?

The ThunderHawk subscription service offered by Bitstream does not log any transactions of any kind on any pages. All upstream data is ALWAYS 128-bit encrypted, and downstream data is 128-bit encrypted on all secure pages.

ThunderHawk servers are in a secure location with access restricted to authorized personnel only. Additionally, the servers display no screen output related to the website contents.

How do I start ThunderHawk?

To start ThunderHawk, choose it from the Programs menu on your Pocket PC. The startup screen appears with the ThunderHawk logo. Once Thunderhawk has connected, you will see the ThunderHawk home page.

How do I select, copy, and paste text?

You can use the following control key combinations to cut, copy and paste text to and from editable fields in ThunderHawk using the system clipboard:

  • Select text by tapping and dragging the stylus over a selection of text, or
  • Press Ctl-A to select all text.
  • Press Ctl-C to copy selected text, or
  • Press Ctl-X to cut selected text.
  • Press Ctl-V to paste text from the clipboard into a text box or text editing application.
  • Press Ctl-Z to undo.

For example, you can copy text from the combo box about the keypad and paste it into a text editing application on your Pocket PC, or copy a website address from an application on your Pocket PC, paste it into the combo box on ThunderHawk, and press Go to access it.

Where does ThunderHawk put files I download?

ThunderHawk puts downloaded files into the “My Documents” folder on your Pocket PC or Smartphone.

Can I edit the Address (URL) on the Add Favorites screen?

The Address (URL) in the Favorites folder is read-only. You see the Address (URL) when adding a new URL to the Favorites folder. You cannot change it on the Add Favorites screen.

If the URL of your Favorites page has changed, we recommend you delete the current Favorites Address (URL), and then add the new one.

How do I access the History list?

The combo box above the keypad functions as a history list. It stores the previous sites you have visited in your session.

To view the History List:

  • Tap the down arrow to the right of the combo box to list the sites you have previously visited.
  • Tap the name of a listed site to display it in the combo box, and then tap Go on the upper right side of the keypad to go to the website.

How do I magnify or zoom in and out on a page?

Tap the Magnifying Glass on the toolbar to change the screen area and effectively zoom in or out of the page. You have three choices for how you want to view text and images on ThunderHawk:
  • High resolution allows for a virtual 800x600 screen size.
  • Medium resolution, the default, displays a virtual 640x480 screen.
  • Low resolution displays a virtual 480x360 screen.

High and medium resolution do not modify text size. Low resolution makes text larger. Tap the resolution you want to make your choice. If you make a change, it is saved across sessions.

To change the screen area:

  1. Tap the Magnifying Glass on the toolbar.

    Zoom Control

  2. Select a virtual screen resolution on the zoom window. Select:
    • High for an 800x600 virtual pixels
    • Medium for 640x480 or
    • Low for 480x360
  3. Click Ok to set the resolution.

What is my ThunderHawk Account Info?

Your ThunderHawk Account Info is the basic information about your ThunderHawk subscription. To view your Account Info, click the checkmark on the toolbar.

Account Info

The Account Info tab contains your ThunderHawk account information. You can change your user name or password on this screen, but you cannot change your registration key.

  • User name - Your user name on the ThunderHawk Account page.
  • Password - Your password on the ThunderHawk Account page.
  • Registration Key - Your registration key for your ThunderHawk account.

To access the ThunderHawk Account Info on a Smartphone, press Menu > Options.

What is HTTP Wrapping and how to I turn it on?

ThunderHawk can “wrap” its low-level client-server commands with an HTTP framework. This enables ThunderHawk commands to pass through proxy servers that reject all communication that isn't HTTP, or through GPRS.

If you are experiencing errors with ThunderHawk communications, you should first enable HTTP Wrapping. To toggle this option, tap the checkmark on the toolbar to open the ThunderHawk User Options screen, and tap the Advanced tab.

Advanced Options

Select the Enable HTTP Wrapping check box and restart ThunderHawk. If you are still experiencing connection difficulites, turn HTTP Wrapping off and contact ThunderHawk Technical Support.

NOTE: Thunderhawk turns the HTTP Wrap feature on at launch time if ThunderHawk fails to connect. If ThunderHawk is able to connect, this feature remains on.

To turn on HTTP Wrapping on a Smartphone, press Menu > Options, select HTTP Wrapping, and press the Action key.

What is the User Agent string and how can I change it?

The user agent is an identifier that the Web browser sends to the Web server to inform it of the browser conventions to use when displaying HTML pages. If you do not set the user agent, ThunderHawk sends the default user agent for your version, as listed below. If you find that you are unable to access pages using ThunderHawk, you may want to change the User Agent by tapping IE, Mozilla, or Netscape to send the user agent for those particular browsers, or by following the instructions below.

To change the User Agent:

  1. Tap the checkmark on the toolbar.
  2. Tap the Advanced tab.

  3. In the Advanced tab, tap the button for IE (Internet Explorer), Mozilla, or Netscape to apply the user agent for that browser.
    NOTE: You can also type a custom user agent in the text box.
  4. Tap Ok to use this user agent.

Once you tap Ok, ThunderHawk will present the user agent you entered to all websites.

If you want to restore the default user agent, tap Refresh in the Advanced tab of the ThunderHawk User Options screen.

Can ThunderHawk accept cookies?

ThunderHawk can accept cookies.

To enable ThunderHawk to accept cookies and to manage them:

  1. Tap the checkmark on the toolbar to access the User Options.
  2. Choose the Advanced tab.
  3. Tap Manage Cookies.

    Manage Cookies

    Cookies are disabled by default, so you will not see any in the dialog box on the next screen.

  4. Select Enable cookies to allow ThunderHawk to accept cookies.
    Select Allow third party cookies to allow ThunderHawk to accept cookies that are not part of the domain you are visiting.
    For example, if you go to a site, you will get a cookie from them if you have clicked enable cookies. If you have clicked allow third party cookies, you will get cookies from that site as well as cookies from sites associated with them.
  5. Click Done to exit the screen.

You should see some cookies on the page. If you do not, keep browsing until you do. You can also manage cookies from this screen. See How do I manage cookies? for details.

To manage cookies:

  1. Tap the checkmark on the Thunderhawk toolbar.
  2. Tap the Advanced tab.
  3. Tap Manage Cookies.

You can perform the following actions:

  • Select the Enable cookies check box to accept cookies from sites.
  • Select the Allow third party cookies check box to accept cookies from sites other than the one you are browsing.
  • To delete a cookie, tap its name and click Delete Selected.
  • To delete multiple cookies, tap the name of each cookie you want to delete and click Delete Selected. Tap the name again to toggle the selection status.
  • To delete all cookies regardless of their selection status, click Delete All.
  • Click Done to exit the screen.

Yes, in addition to these FAQs, ThunderHawk has an internal help system integrated with your Pocket PC. To access this help page, click the question mark icon Question Mark on the toolbar, or Start, Help, and ThunderHawkII on your Pocket PC. To return to ThunderHawk, close this screen and select ThunderHawkII from the Start menu.

Why do I have to choose between the 'original' window and the 'new' window?

ThunderHawk allows you to view Web pages in one window, so when you click a link that causes a website to open a new window in a standard desktop browser, you have to choose whether you want to view that new window or continue viewing the original window in ThunderHawk.

If you chose to view the new window, you can always return to the original window by tapping the back button on the toolbar.

If you chose to view the original window, you can tap the back button and choose to view the new window.
